Biography

Paul Sacher was a Swiss conductor and music organizer. He studied musicology and conducting under Felix Weingartner. In 1926, at the age of twenty, he founded the Basler Kammerorchester (BKO) with the aim of presenting both pre-classical and contemporary music. In 1928, he also founded the Basel Chamber Choir. In 1933, he established the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, dedicated to early and pre-Romantic music, and later merged it in 1954 into the Basel Academy of Music, which he led until 1969. Sacher founded the Collegium Musicum Zurich in 1941 and served as its artistic director until its dissolution in 1992. In 1973, he established the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel, housing one of the world’s most important collections of musical manuscripts. He died on May 26, 1999.
