Biography
Ensemble intercontemporain is a Paris-based chamber orchestra founded in 1976 by Pierre Boulez with the support of Michel Guy and Nicholas Snowman. Dedicated to the interpretation and promotion of contemporary music, the ensemble has worked closely with composers to develop new instrumental techniques and interdisciplinary projects. Under musical directors including Susanna Mälkki (2006â2012) and Matthias Pintscher (2013â2023), it commissions new works regularly, often in collaboration with the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music. The ensemble has also built an extensive recorded output, particularly of works by composers such as György Ligeti, including Chamber Concerto, Ramifications, and Aventures. It was designated a European cultural ambassador by the European Commission in 2012 and was awarded the Polar Music Prize in 2022.
