Biography
Jean-Claude Malgoire was a French conductor of classical music with a particular interest in works from the Baroque period with many recordings of Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi although his repertoire also included operas by Mozart and Salieri.
Born in Avignon in southern France, he studied at the Paris Conservatoire and won prizes playing the oboe. He performed with the Ensemble Européen de Musique Contemporaine and the Orchestre de Paris and in 1966 founded the Baroque ensemble La Grande Ãcurie et la Chambre du Roy. Their recordings include 'Handel: Water Music' (1984), 'Charpentier: Te Deum; Messe de Minuit' (1988) and 'Handel: The Concerti Grossi, Op. 3 & 6' (1990). He founded another group, the Florilegium Musicum de Paris and became music director of the Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing. Over his career, he recorded dozens of albums including 'Monteverdi: Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda; Ballo delle Ingrate' (2017) with singers András Laczó and Isabelle Poulenard and 'Neukomm: Requiem à la Mémoire de Louis XVI' (2017) with the Chambre du Roy. He died on April 14th 2018 following surgery with several concerts scheduled. Limelight Magazine said he is regarded widely as "one of the pioneers of the rediscovery of early music in France".
