Biography
Albrecht Mayer is one of the world's most renowned oboists. From Erlangen, Germany, he began his musical career as a chorister in Bamberg Cathedral, and then studied the oboe with Gerhard Scheuer, Georg Meerwein, Maurice Bourgue and Ingo Goritzki. He gained orchestral experience with the European Community Youth Orchestra. His first professional appointment as oboist was with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, where he was appointed principal oboist in 1990. In 1992 he left to become principal oboist with Berliner Philharmoniker, a position he has held ever since.
He appears regularly as a concerto soloist throughout the world and in concerts of chamber works with pianists Hélène Grimaud, Leif Ove Andsnes and Lars Vogt. He has made several recordings as a soloist and as part of various ensembles. Albums include 'In Venedig' (2009) which includes works by Italian composers Vivaldi, Marcello and Albinoni and 'Bonjour Paris' (2010), which contains works by French composers Satie, Fauré and Françaix. In 2019, Mayer performed as the oboe soloist on an album released by Deutsche Grammophon called 'Longing for Paradise' which included original works for oboe and orchestra including Goossens' 'Concerto in One Movement Op. 45' and some arrangements for oboe and orchestra including Ravel's 'Le Tombeau de Couperin'.
