Biography

Formed in Tokyo, Japan in 1984, Orquesta de la Luz is a critically acclaimed salsa group. The band was fronted and led by vocalist Nora, who would remain their only consistent member. The band began performing live at local clubs, finally recording a demo tape in 1986. Nora finally traveled to New York in 1988 with the demo tape in order to secure a record contract, which they landed the following year. In 1990, they released their debut album De La Luz – also known as Salsa Caliente del Japón in the US - which received critical praise and reached Number 1 on Billboard’s Latin Albums chart. The album was also released in several Latin American countries which proved to be a great success. The band undertook many successful international tours and released a series of hit albums including Salsa No Tiene Frontera (1991), Somos Differentes (1992), La Aventura (1993), and Sabor De La Luz (1995). After years of success, the band decided to split up with each member pursuing separate musical avenues. After the band’s dissolution, several live and compilation albums were released to celebrate their musical legacy. In 2002, Orquesta de la Luz reunited for a one-time performance at the World Peace Music Festival. The reaction to their performance inspired the group to reunite permanently. In 2004, they released ¡Banzaaay!, their first new album in nine years. The album was followed by ¡Caliente! (2008), Ron Viejo (2009), and Gracias Salseros (2019).
