Biography

Puerto Rican salsa singer Gilberto Santa Rosa was born on August 21, 1962, in Santurce, where he developed his interest in music from a young age. He made his recording debut in 1976 with the Mario Ortiz Orchestra but it was during the early 1980s when his professional career really began to take off. During this period he recorded with various renowned Latin orchestras including the Tommy Olivencia Orchestra and the Willie Rosario Orchestra. He quickly became known for his improvisational style of salsa and Latin audiences were thrilled by some of his creative renditions of traditional songs. In 2007, he received a Grammy Award for his critically-acclaimed album Directo al Corazón. With 29 albums to his credit, Gilberto Santa Rosa shows no signs of relaxing his intense touring and recording career and now holds the record of having had the most number 1 albums in Billboard's Tropical Chart. In 2020, he released the album Colegas, which featured duets with other salsa luminaries such as Tito Nieves, José Alberto "El Canario," Isaac Delgado, Victor Manuelle, and Maelo Ruiz. 2022 saw the release of Debut y Segunda Tanda, Vol. 1, a collection of covers and previously unreleased material, followed by a second volume in 2024.
