Biography
Luis Enrique MejÃa López was born on 28 September 1962 in Madriz, Somoto, Nicaragua, and is known as a singer and songwriter. Growing up in a family of musicians, he initially performed folk music before moving to Miami, where he joined the Latin folklore group Ayer es Hoy and was discovered by Sony Music. His debut album Amor de Medianoche was released in 1987, but it was not until his relocation to Puerto Rico that he achieved mainstream success, producing five salsa albums between 1989 and 1991, including Luces del Alma and Los PrÃncipes de la Salsa in collaboration with Eddie Santiago. In the 2000s he broadened his profile with TV work while continuing to record, but his major late-career peak arrived with Ciclos (2009), powered by the single âYo No Sé Mañana,â which became one of his signature hits and brought major awards attention, including a Grammy award for Best Tropical Latin Album. He followed that period with projects like Soy y Seré (2011) and the covers-focused Jukebox (2014), and later took on high-visibility judging work in Peru. In 2019 he highlighted his musicianship with the collaboration album Tiempo al tiempo alongside C4 TrÃo, and in 2025 he stayed present in the salsa conversation with singles including âAyúdame a Entenderâ and âDando y Dando.â
