Biography

Gladys Jordan, known professionally as Mrs. Mills, was born on August 29, 1918, in Beckton, East London, England. She began playing piano at a young age and developed her musical skills under the influence of her mother. In February 1947, she married Gilbert (Bert) Mills. Mrs. Mills' music career started while working as a superintendent of a typing pool. She performed as a honky-tonk pianist in the evenings and weekends, leading to her discovery by a talent scout at a dance event. In 1961, she released her first record, "Mrs Mills Medley", which entered the Top Twenty of the UK Singles Chart. Her television debut came on The Billy Cotton Show in December 1961. Her repertoire included sing-along and party tunes, often performed in a stride piano technique and tack piano style. Notable songs include "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" and "Hello, Dolly!". She appeared on The Morecambe and Wise Show in 1971 and 1974. Mrs. Mills' career spanned well into the 1970s, with notable albums including Mrs. Mills Party Medley, released in 1964. She passed away on February 24, 1978, due to a heart attack. Her legacy includes the vintage Steinway Vertegrand upright piano used at Abbey Road Studios, known as The Mrs. Mills Piano, which continues to be used in recordings and was featured in the 2024 Doctor Who episode "The Devil's Chord".
