Biography

Mercedes Simone, born Mercedes Celia Simone on April 21, 1904, in Villa Elisa, Buenos Aires, Argentina, was a singer and actress. She began her musical career as a guitarist, debuting at the Teatro Odeón in Bahía Blanca. Her breakthrough came with her participation in the film ¡Tango! (1933), directed by Luis Moglia Barth. Simone also performed regularly on radio stations like Radio Splendid and Radio Belgrano. She recorded over 240 tracks for labels including RCA, Victor, and Odeón. Her notable songs include "La marcha nupcial" (1932) and "Milonga sentimental" (1932). Simone toured extensively across Latin America, earning the nickname "La Dama del Tango". She also composed several popular tunes, such as "Cantando" and "Angustias". Simone passed away on October 2, 1990, leaving behind a legacy in Argentine tango music.
