Martine Kimberley Sherrie Ponting, known professionally as Martine McCutcheon, was born on May 14, 1976, in Hackney, England. She began her career at an early age, appearing in television commercials and making her television debut in the children's drama Bluebirds in 1989. Before embarking on a solo music career, Martine McCutcheon was part of the pop group Milan, which had minor success with singles like "Is It Love You're After" and "Affectionately Mine". In 1999, she released her debut studio album You Me & Us, which peaked at number 2 in the UK and included the Number 1 single "Perfect Moment". The album also featured Top 10 entries "I've Got You" and "Talking in Your Sleep / Love Me". Her follow-up album, Wishing (2000), produced two more UK Top 10 singles: "I'm Over You" and "On the Radio". Martine McCutcheon's third album, Musicality (2002), received poor reception.
