Biography

Marlui Nóbrega Miranda is a Brazilian composer and etnomusicologist born on October 12, 1949, in Fortaleza. In 1967, she won the Festival de Música de Brasilia with her sister Ana Miranda for the song “Boa vida”. She studied architecture at the University of Brasilia and orchestra direction at the Facultad de Santa Marcelina. Since 1974, she has researched Amazonian musical traditions. Miranda released her debut album, Olho d’água, in 1979. Her discography continued with Revivência (1983) and Rio acima (1986). She composed music for documentaries including Jari (1980) and Claude Lévi-Strauss: auprès de l’Amazonie (2009). In 1991, she served as an indigenous language consultant for the film Jugando en los campos del Señor. She participated in the 1998 album O sol de Oslo. Miranda received a Guggenheim Fellowship and the 2002 Orden del Mérito Cultural.
