Biography

MÃ¡ria GombitovÃ¡, known professionally as Marika GombitovÃ¡, was born on September 12, 1956, in Turany nad Ondavou, Czechoslovakia, and is a singer and composer. She began her musical journey at the age of nine with piano lessons and later joined an amateur band called Profily during high school. In 1975, she made her first recordings for Slovak Radio KoÅ¡ice. GombitovÃ¡'s breakthrough came when she joined the professional group Modus in 1976, releasing several singles as a backing vocalist before launching her solo career with "BoÄ¾avÃ© NÃ¡mestie" in 1977. Her debut solo album DievÄa Do DaÅ¾Äa was released in 1979 and featured the hit single "Vyznanie", which won first prize at the Fourth Intervision Song Contest in Poland (1980). Despite a career-threatening car crash in 1981, GombitovÃ¡ returned with SlneÄnÃ½ KalendÃ¡r (1982) and continued to release successful albums such as Mince Na Dne FontÃ¡n (1983), which won the Gold Arms award for best-selling record.
