Mahaleo, a Malagasy folk-pop band from Madagascar, was founded in 1972 by Dama Rasolofondraosolo Zafimahaleo and six of his classmates during student protests at their high school. On the first day of the protests, they performed a song they called, "Matoa 'Zahay Manao Girevy" ("Why We're on Strike"), composed by Dama. Mahaleo released several albums, including Mahaleo ⢠Bande originale du film de Paes & Rajaonarivelo (2005) and Mama Sera (2007). The band's music, characterized by its tsentsigat genre, blends acoustic folk, protest songs, and diverse Malagasy musical traditions. They performed at the historic Olympia venue in Paris in 2007, becoming the first Malagasy band to do so. Notable members who have passed away include Raoul (2010), Nono (2014), Fafah (2019), Dadah (2019), and Charle (2021).
