Biography

Nahawa Doumbia, born in 1960 in Mafélé, Mali, is a prominent singer known for her contributions to Wassoulou music. She grew up in Bougouni and gained initial recognition through regional contests such as the Semaines de la Jeunesse and the Biennale de la Jeunesse. In 1982, Doumbia released her debut album La Grande Cantatrice Malienne Vol 1, accompanied by her husband N'gou Bagayoko on acoustic guitar. This was followed by La Grande Cantatrice Malienne Vol 2 and Vol 3. Her music blends traditional instruments with electric sounds, reflecting the rhythms of Wassoulou. In 2021, she released Kanawa, an album addressing contemporary issues in Mali, recorded at Salif Keita's studio in Bamako. Doumbia's work often addressed women's struggles and social issues, making her a significant voice in Malian music.
