Biography
Daniel Owino Misiani, born on February 22, 1940, in Nyamagongo, Tanganyika Territory (now Tanzania), was a guitarist and singer known for his pioneering contributions to the Benga music genre. Despite his parents' religious opposition, Misiani moved to Kenya in the 1960s to pursue a musical career. He first recorded with the Victoria Boys in 1965, which later evolved into the popular Shirati Jazz band. Misiani sang primarily in Dholuo and Swahili languages and released numerous recordings throughout his career, including Sheraline (1977) and Benga Blast! (1989). He was imprisoned on several occasions for lyrics perceived as political criticism. Misiani died on May 17, 2006, in a road traffic accident in Kenya. His son, Robert Misiani, also pursued a music career under the stage name Gun B. After his death, the leadership of Shirati Jazz was taken over by his wife, Beatrice Atieno Owino.
