Biography
Mustapha Tettey Addy, born in 1942 in Avenor, Accra, Ghana, is a percussionist from an esteemed Ga family of drummers. His father initiated him into drumming, traditional songs, and ritual dances. After his father's death in 1963, he became the leader of the ritual drummers and studied at the Institute for African Studies at the University of Ghana. He toured extensively beginning in 1965, performing across Africa, Europe, and the USA. In 1974, he founded the group Ehimomo and settled in Düsseldorf, teaching percussion and touring with his ensemble. Between 1972 and 1981, he released seven albums, including Come and Drum (1979). He returned to Ghana in 1982, working at the Institute of African Studies and forming The Obonu Drummers in 1986. Their album The Royal Drums of Ghana (1991) introduced ceremonial Ashanti music internationally. He was credited as the likely inventor of the dance rhythm "Fume Fume".
