Biography
Luperce Bezerra Pessoa de Miranda (performing as Luperce Miranda; July 28, 1904 â April 5, 1977) was a Brazilian choro composer, mandolinist, and pianist from Recife. Miranda learned music from family members and composed a first piece at age 15. In 1924, Miranda founded the Jazz-Orchester Leão do Norte. In 1927, Miranda established the group Turunas da Mauricéa, which performed in Rio de Janeiro and recorded the composition âPiniãoâ (1928). Miranda later founded the group Voz do Sertão and the ensemble Regional Luperce Miranda (1929). During the 1930s, Miranda accompanied artists including Mário Reis, Carmen Miranda, and Francisco Alves. Throughout a career involving over 700 recordings and 500 compositions, Miranda collaborated with Dino 7 Cordas and established a music school for string instruments. Mandolin and cavaquinho solos by Miranda featured on recordings including âAté amanhãâ and âNo tabuleiro da baianaâ. Miranda died on April 5, 1977.
