Biography

Born David Brown in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 25, 1985, Lucky Daye developed his melodic skills as a child despite a strict family rule that banned a great deal of music because of their religion. Upon abandoning those teachings, Brown quickly absorbed the R&B masters. As a teenager, he competed on the fourth season of American Idol (2005) and although he did not make the Top 10, he quickly established himself as a songwriter whose work would be recorded by luminaries such as Mary J. Blige, Boyz II Men, and Keith Sweat. He worked on his solo material, developing a unique sound that managed to be both retro and modern, and after over a decade in the business, finally released his first solo work with the single “Roll Some Mo” in 2018. A pair of EPs, titled I and II, came out that same year. His debut album, 2019’s Painted, garnered good reviews as well as four Grammy nominations including Best R&B Album. In 2020, he recorded “Shoulda”, a cover of Toni Braxton’s “Love Shoulda Brought You Home”, which was released as a single. A deluxe edition of Painted, which added “Shoulda” to the track list, came out in May of that year. Towards the end of the year, Lucky Daye co-wrote the single “Better” by former One Direction member Zayn. In February 2021, Lucky Daye issued his third EP, Table for Two, which hit Number 6 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. His second album, Candydrip, was released in March 2022, and featured the singles “Over” and the title track.
