Biography

John Baslington Lyde, known as Lobby Loyde, was born on May 18, 1941, in Longreach, Queensland. He began his musical journey playing classical piano and violin before transitioning to guitar. In the late 1950s, he joined the Brisbane group Devil's Disciples as a guitarist. His breakthrough came with The Purple Hearts, who had a Top 40 hit with "Early in the Morning" in 1966. Loyde then joined Wild Cherries and later Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs, contributing to their number 8 album The Hoax Is Over (1971). He formed Coloured Balls in March 1972, releasing notable albums like Ball Power (1973). His solo work includes the psychedelic album Plays with George Guitar (1971) and the space opera Beyond Morgia: The Labyrinths of Klimster (2007). Loyde was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006. He died on April 27, 2007, from lung cancer.
