Biography

Leon S. Walton, known professionally as Leon Ashley, was born on May 18, 1936, in Covington, Georgia, and became an American country music singer. He released his debut single in 1960 on Goldband Records. Ashley founded his own label, Ashley Records, in 1964. His breakthrough came with the release of "Laura (What's He Got That I Ain't Got)", which topped the country singles charts in 1967 and marked a milestone as it was the first instance of a country music artist writing, recording, releasing, distributing, and publishing their own material. The accompanying album, Laura (What's He Got That I Ain't Got), reached number 10 on the Top Country Albums chart. Ashley died in Hendersonville, Tennessee, on October 20, 2013, after a lengthy illness.
