Biography

The Sun Also Rises was a Welsh folk duo from Cardiff, active around 1970. The duo comprised Graham Hemingway on guitar and Anne Hemingway on vocals and percussion. The couple married in 1968 and impulsively began performing together, adopting their name as a reference to the Ernest Hemingway novel. Their musical style, often described as acid-folk, blended traditional arrangements with self-penned compositions about mythological beings. The duo was frequently compared to the Incredible String Band and Tir-na-Nog. In 1970, the group released its sole studio album, The Sun Also Rises, produced by Ian A. Anderson for The Village Thing. The recording featured John Turner and Andy Leggett of the Pigsty Hill Light Orchestra, including the track “Suddenly It’s Evening”. Following extensive touring, the duo became inactive.
