Biography

Magdalena Thora, known professionally as Leni Stern, was born on April 28, 1952, in Munich, Germany, and was a jazz guitarist, singer, and pianist. She began her musical journey at six with piano lessons, later switching to guitar at eleven. At seventeen, she formed her own theater company. Stern's transition into music began in 1977 when she moved to the United States to study film scoring at Berklee College of Music. In 1983, she formed her own band and released her debut album, Clairvoyant, in 1985. Over the next two decades, Stern released numerous albums, including The Next Day (1987), Secrets (1989), and Black Guitar (1997). She won the Gibson Guitar Female Jazz Guitarist of the Year award four times. In 1997, Stern founded Leni Stern Recordings, allowing her full control over her artistic output. She also released several albums, such as Kindness of Strangers (2000), When Evening Falls (2004), Jelell (2013), and 4 (2020).
