Lena Hilda Zavaroni, born on November 4, 1963, in Greenock, Renfrewshire, was a Scottish singer and TV host. She began singing at age two and was discovered by producer Tommy Scott in 1973 while performing with her father and uncle. Her breakthrough came in 1974 when she appeared on Opportunity Knocks, winning the show for five consecutive weeks. This led to the release of her debut album, Ma! (He's Making Eyes at Me), which reached number 8 on the UK Albums Chart, making Zavaroni the youngest artist to have a Top 10 album in the UK at just 10 years and 146 days old. She followed this with singles like "(You've Got) Personality / Schools Out" and "Ma! (He's Making Eyes At Me)". In 1974, Lena Zavaroni performed at a benefit show in Hollywood alongside Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball. Despite signing with Stax Records in the US, she did not achieve significant chart success there. Lena Zavaroni also ventured into television, starring in her own series Lena from 1980 to 1982. Throughout her career, she released several albums including Presenting Lena Zavaroni (1977), Songs Are Such Good Things (1978), and Hold Tight, It's Lena (1982). Lena Zavaroni struggled with anorexia nerviosa since the age of 13 and depression from 15 years old. She underwent a psycho-surgical operation in September 1999 to treat her depression but died of bronchopneumonia on October 1, 1999, at the age of 35.
