Biography

Laura Stevenson is an American singer-songwriter born in Long Island, New York, on April 25, 1984. She began her musical career in the punk/folk band Bomb the Music Industry! as keyboardist and backing vocalist, before going solo in the mid-2000s. She formed the band Laura Stevenson and the Cans, with whom she recorded her first two albums, the self-released A Record (2008), reissued by Don Giovanni Records, the label on which the following Sit Resist (2011) was released, acclaimed for its blend of folk and rock, which put her on the map on the American indie scene. Since then, she has gone solo with Wheel (2013), produced by Kevin McMahon (The Walkmen, Real Estate), which refines her style towards a denser, more mature folk-rock, followed by the very direct Cocksure (2015). In 2019, Laura Stevenson changes her tone with The Big Freeze, an introspective and personal album, largely written in isolation and dealing with mental health and family relationships. The album receives good reviews for its sincerity and musical subtlety. It was followed in 2021 by the eponymous Laura Stevenson, produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile), where she blends folk, indie rock and orchestral arrangements. Its successor, Late Great, was released in 2025.
