In 2004, brothers Sascha, Sebastian, and Johannes Madsen founded an indie project in Clenze, Lower Saxony, which they named after their last name, Madsen. With Niko Maurer on bass and Folkert Jahnke on keyboards, the bandâs lineup was complete . The lead single âDie Perfektion,â released in March 2004 , heralded the debut album *Madsen*, which was released two months later . The self-titled LP, released via Vertigo Records, peaked at No. 23 in Germany and propelled Madsen from the âinsider tipâ category into the mainstream. With their second album , *Goodbye Logik*, the group achieved their first Top 10 placement in Germany in 2006, reaching No. 8. The follow-up, Frieden im Krieg, reached No. 6 in 2008. Madsen are often compared to the early Tocotronic. The band plays a mix of indie rock, punk, and socially conscious pop. Their 2010 album Labyrinth once again reached the German Top 10. Another album, Wo es beginnt, followed in 2012. In Austria, it peaked at No. 4, while in Germany the album climbed as high as No. 2. The single âLass die Musik anâ reached No. 81 on the German charts. To mark the bandâs tenth anniversary, the group released their first live album, 10 Jahre Madsen, in 2014. This was followed by three more Top 10 albums in Germany: *Kompass* ( 2015), *Lichtjahre* ( 2018), and Na gut dann nicht (2020). After a brief hiatus, Madsen released their ninth studio album, Hollywood, in 2023. With this album, the band reached the top of the German charts for the first time. Three years later, the album Smile followed, securing another Top 10 spot in the German charts at number 4.
