Gregory Bortey Promise Newman, popularly known as King Promise, is a Ghanaian singer and songwriter. He was born on August 16, 1995, in the capital city of Accra. Growing up, he absorbed many musical influences, including reggae, R&B, and the sounds of the Ghanaian highlife. This was driven in part by his father's diverse tastes in music, shaping King Promise's distinct sonic style. He began writing songs and collaborating with producers, officially releasing music in 2017 on different streaming platforms. His independent releases generated buzz in the local music scene, and very soon his music was being streamed by millions of listeners. Early songs such as "Oh Yeah," "Hey Sexy," and "Selfish" established him as a bonafide hitmaker in the scene, and his 2018 Wizkid collaboration, "Tokyo," went on to become a massive success on local radio. That same year, King Promise won Best Male Vocalist of the Year at the U.K. edition of the Ghana Music Awards. In 2019, he released his debut full-length album, As Promised. This album included songs such as the incredibly popular single "Commando," which displayed his Afrobeats-influenced style. King Promise's second full-length album titled 5 Star was released in 2022 and featured cameos by Omah Lay, Headie One, Patoranking, Chance the Rapper, and Vic Mensa. In 2023, King Promise released the single "Terminator," which was followed by a remix with Nigerian musician Young John. A second remix of âTerminator,â featuring Sean Paul and Tiwa Savage, followed late in 2023, extending the singleâs international run after the Young Jonn version. In 2024, King Promise released âParis,â âContinentalâ with Shallipopi and âFavourite Storyâ with Sarkodie and Olivetheboy, all leading into True to Self, his third album and first under the 5K Records/Sony Music Entertainment UK licence. The 12-track set also featured Fave, Gabzy, Fridayy, Lasmid and Ladipoe, and was promoted with the True to Self World Tour, a 12-city itinerary across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. He expanded the album later that year with True to Self (Deluxe), adding tracks such as âEyes Dried Overâ with Tom Walker, âSet Me Free,â âKeep It Sexyâ and â2 Paranoidâ with Ronisia. In 2025, King Promise won Artist of the Year, Afropop/Afrobeats Artist of the Year, Afropop Song of the Year for âParisâ and Best Album/EP of the Year for True to Self at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards. He also released âReal Thing,â âNo Issuesâ and âBad Habitsâ with Davido. In 2026, he reunited with Mr Eazi for the joint album See What Weâve Done, released through emPawa Africa and preceded by âSee What Weâve Done,â âMarianaâ and âThat Way.â
