Kevin Edward Locke, born TÈokéya InážiÅ on June 23, 1954 in Los Angeles, CA, was an American flutist of Lakota descent from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Anishinaabe of White Earth. He began his musical journey by learning the hoop dance from Arlo Good Bear, a Mandan Hidatsa Indian, and later taught himself to speak Lakota. Locke's career took off in 1978 when he started performing internationally, traveling to more than 90 countries. His performances typically included flute playing, singing Lakota songs (some in English), and demonstrating the Sioux hoop dance using 28 wooden hoops. Notable recordings include First Flute (1999) and Midnight Strong Heart. Locke received numerous awards, including the National Heritage Fellowship in 1990, the Bush Foundation Enduring Vision Award in 2009, and the United States Artists Fellowship in 2020. He passed away on September 30, 2022, in Hill City, South Dakota, at the age of 68, following an asthma attack.
