Shakti is a fusion band founded in 1973 by English guitarist John McLaughlin and Indian violinist L. Shankar. The group initially formed under the name Turiyananda Sangit with percussionists Zakir Hussain on tabla and Vikku Vinayakram on ghatam. Shakti's music combined Carnatic music with elements of jazz, representing a fusion of Hindustani and Carnatic traditions. Their debut album, Shakti With John McLaughlin, was released in June 1976 under Columbia Records. The band toured extensively from 1975 to 1977. In 2023, Shakti reformed with new members including violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan and released their first album in 46 years, This Moment. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album in 2024.
