Coyote Oldman, a duo of new-age musicians consisting of Barry Stramp and Michael Graham Allen, was formed in 1981 when the two met at an Oklahoma City crafts fair. The group is named after the trickster archetype in Native American mythology. Barry Stramp, born in Oklahoma in 1959, is a classically trained concert flautist, while Alabama-born Michael Graham Allen, born in 1950, is both a musician and a manufacturer of handmade flutes. Coyote Oldman released their album, Landscape, in 1988. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, they continued to release albums, including Thunder Chord (1990), In Medicine River (1992), Compassion (1993), The Shape of Time (1995), and Rainbird (2004). Their album Under an Ancient Sky in 2008, followed by Time Travelers in 2011.
