Biography
A professional singer who can handle R&B and gospel with equal aplomb, Kelly Price was born April 4, 1973 in New York. Before she was twenty she established herself as a first-rate back-up vocalist and contributed to such successful tracks as The Notorious B.I.G.âs âMo Money, Mo Problemsâ and Mariah Careyâs chat-topper âFantasyâ. Price called in many of the heavy-hitters she once worked with to contribute to her debut album, 1998âs Soul of a Woman, on which she had a hand in writing over half of the songs, including âFriend of Mineâ which was remixed into a number 1 R&B single. 2000âs Mirror Mirror went top 5 on both the Hot 200 and the R&B album chart, and the single âAs We Layâ garnered her a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance. Her 2003 album Priceless boasted appearances by Eric Clapton and Faith Evans, and returned Price to the top 10 on the R&B and regular album charts. Price showed off her gospel chops with the live album This Is Who I Am, which topped the Gospal album chart in 2006. She acted in and contributed to the soundtrack of the Tyler Perry movie Why Did I Get Married? She went secular on 2011âs Kelly, and the result was her fifth top 10 R&B album. 2014âs Sing, Pray, Love, Vol. 1: Sing was the first of a planned trilogy. Showing her mastery over yet another musical genre, she sang on Kanye Westâs âUltralight Beamâ which was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 2017 Grammys.
