Kashtin, a Canadian folk rock duo, was formed in 1984 by Claude McKenzie and Florent Vollant, two Innu musicians from the Maliotenam reserve on the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec. The band began as a cover group before transitioning to original material that blended mainstream folk rock with traditional Innu makushan drums. Kashtin's breakthrough came with their self-titled debut album Kashtin, released in 1989, which was recorded in the Innu-aimun language and became a major hit in Quebec, Greenland, and English Canada, eventually achieving double platinum certification and winning the Prix Félix for Best Debut Album. The singles "E Uassiuian" and "Tshinanu" were popular hits from this album. In 1990, Kashtin toured Europe and gained significant commercial success, particularly in France. Their second album Innu, released in 1991, featured the hit single "Ishkuess". The following year, they headlined the televised concert Indian Time II: Fly With Eagles. In 1994, Kashtin signed with Columbia Records for their third album Akua Tuta. Following this release, Florent Vollant took a break from music, and Claude McKenzie released his debut solo album Innu Town in 1996. Although they have not released another album as Kashtin, the duo has continued to perform occasional live shows together.
