Biography

Anthony Bird, better known as Tony Bird, born on February 18, 1945, in Zomba, Nyasaland (now Malawi), was a Malawian-born South African folk rock singer-songwriter. He began his music career with solo performances at the Space Theatre in Cape Town in 1970. He released two albums: Tony Bird (1976) and Bird of Paradise (1978). His unique style garnered favorable reviews from local press and promoters. In the 1980s, he moved to London and toured internationally with Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Later in the decade, Bird settled permanently in New York City. In 1990, he recorded Sorry Africa, which featured guest musicians such as Arlen Roth and José Neto. The album included one of his most popular songs, "Mango Time". Anthony Bird passed away on April 17, 2019, following a battle with cancer.
