Joel Rubin, born October 14, 1955, in Los Angeles, is an American clarinetist, klezmer musician, ethnomusicologist, and scholar of Jewish music. He studied classical clarinet at the California Institute of the Arts and later moved to New York City, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the State University of New York at Purchase in 1978. Rubin's interest in klezmer music began after discovering recordings by Dave Tarras. His career as a klezmer performer started in 1980 with the Hester Street Klezmer band and The Old Country duo. In 1985, he began teaching at KlezKamp. He moved to Berlin in 1989 and founded the group Brave Old World, touring extensively in Europe before he departed in 1992. In 1994, he established the Joel Rubin Ensemble. Notable collaborations include Veretski Pass, with whom he released Poyln: A Gilgul (2015).
