Biography

Jakob is a New Zealand post-rock band from Napier that formed in 1998. The trio consists of the guitarist Jeff Boyle, the bassist Maurice Beckett, and the drummer Jason Johnston, and is known for an instrumental sound that largely eschews vocals. They achieved early recognition through local performances before releasing their debut eponymous EP in 1999. Their first studio album, Subsets of Sets, was released (2001) and earned multiple nominations at the bNet independent music awards. The ensemble toured extensively across North America and Europe between 2004 and 2005, appearing at South by Southwest and supporting the bands Tool and Isis. Their discography includes the studio albums Cale:Drew (2003), Solace (2006), and Sines (2014). The group's music has been featured on the soundtrack for the documentary Waverider. In 2023, the band announced they were returning to the studio to record a sixth studio album.
