He began his career with early mixtapes such as Beats from New York (2000) and gained recognition for official collaborations with artists like Q-Tip, Nas, Lauryn Hill, and the Roots. J. Period's unique "audio-biography" style incorporates personal interviews into compilations. In 2008, he produced the soundtrack for Tony Hawk's Motion for Nintendo DS. Notable releases include Wake Up! Radio (2011) and #RAGEISBACK (2013). He received multiple accolades, including Mixtape DJ Rookie of the Year from Elemental Magazine in 2003 and Mixtape DJ of the Year from Source Magazine in 2005.
