Hyun Cheol, born Kang Sang-soo on July 29, 1942, in Busan, South Korea, was a singer and composer known for his contributions to pop music. He studied at Dong-a University before making his debut as a musician in 1969 with the song "My Heartless Love". Following this release, Hyun Cheol joined the band Hyun Chul & Bees, which achieved limited success. His breakthrough came as a solo artist in 1982 with the hits "I Think of You Whenever I Sit or Stand" and "Love Is Like a Butterfly", propelling him to fame during the late 1980s. He was recognized as one of the "four emperors of trot" alongside Sul Woon-do, Tae Jin-ah, and Song Dae-kwan. Hyun Cheol won the grand prize at the KBS Music Awards in both 1989 for "Garden Balsam Love" and 1990 for "Not Anymore". Throughout his career, he released numerous albums including HyeonCheol Hit Music & Port Medley (1988), HyeonCheol Hit Music 2 (1989), and HyeonCheol Golden Hit (1994). His health began to decline after cervical disc surgery in the early 2000s, which damaged his nervous system. Hyun Cheol's last television appearance was on episode 74 of Immortal Songs in 2020. He passed away on July 15, 2024, following a period of illness and was buried at Bundang Memorial Park.
