Hum, an alternative rock band from Champaign, Illinois, United States, formed in 1989 with guitarist Andy Switzky, guitarist Matt Talbott, bassist Akis Boyatzis and drummer Jeff Kropp. The initial lineup recorded their first demo, Kissing Me Is Like Kissing an Angel, in Steve Albini's basement. Hum released their debut album, Fillet Show, in 1991 on local label 12 Inch Records. After several lineup changes, the band signed with RCA Records and released their major-label debut, You'd Prefer an Astronaut, in 1995. This album featured their breakthrough hit "Stars", which peaked at Number 11 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and Number 28 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Hum continued with albums like Downward Is Heavenward (1998) and Inlet (2020), their first album of new material in over twenty-two years. The band disbanded in 2000 but reunited for tours starting in 2015.
