Herbert Roth was a German composer and musician born on December 14, 1926, in Suhl. He began studying piano, accordion, and clarinet at age nine and performed publicly as a youth. After qualifying as a master hairdresser, he founded the Suhler Volksmusik ensemble in 1950, later renamed Herbert Roth und seine Instrumentalgruppe. The ensemble turned professional in 1956 following successful regional performances. Roth achieved national fame for his folk compositions, including the singles âAm schönen Saalestrandâ and âGrüà mir Oberwiesenthalâ. His most celebrated work is the âRennsteigliedâ, which became an enduring cultural anthem. Under the pseudonym Matthias Wendt, he also composed dance music for various entertainers. Roth continued to tour and appear on television until his final performance in March 1983. He died of stomach cancer on October 17, 1983. The posthumous album Herbert Roth â Das Portrait was released in 1986.
