Biography

Heather Small (January 20, 1965) is an English soul singer best known as the lead vocalist of the celebrated '90s dance music act M People. Born in Ladbroke Grove, London, she joined her first group Hot House during her teenage years and later achieved mainstream popularity alongside Manchester DJ Mike Pickering under the moniker M People. The band garnered considerable success through singles such as "Moving on Up" (1993) "One Night in Heaven" (1993), and "Search for the Hero" (1995), all of which entered the Top 10 in the UK charts. Following the release of the compilation The Best of M People in 1999, the group went on an indefinite hiatus. In 2000, Heather Small made her solo debut with the full-length Proud, whose title track was extensively used in TV shows like Queer as Folk, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and The Biggest Loser. The album peaked at Number 12 in the UK and was certified Gold by the BPI. After taking a break from her music career to raise her first child, Heather Small returned in 2006 with her second LP Close to a Miracle. Later that year, she rejoined M People and spent the next couple of years touring solo and with the group. In 2018, she celebrated her 25th anniversary in the music business with a series of appearances throughout the UK. Preceded by the singles "Love Me or Not" and "Excited," her third solo album Colour My Life appeared in 2022.
