In addition to his solo work, Williams established a career as a multi-instrumentalist for several influential groups, becoming a permanent member of The Field Mice and performing with Blueboy, The Hit Parade, and Trembling Blue Stars. Under his own name, Williams released the albums Rebellion (1994) and California (1998). As of 2002, he was a member of Trembling Blue Stars while employed at the BBC.
