Groovie Ghoulies was an American pop punk band from Sacramento, California, formed in 1983 by Jeff "Kepi" Alexander. The group drew musical influences from early punk bands like the Ramones, the Misfits, and The Dickies, as well as garage rock and bubblegum groups of the 1960s and 1950s rock and roll artists. Their lyrics often explored themes from horror movies and science fiction. In 1986, their lineup released a first single, "Flying Saucer" (1986). Three years later, Groovie Ghoulies recorded a debut album, Appetite for Adrenochrome (1989). The band's popularity grew locally by 1994 with the release of Born in the Basement (1994), leading to a contract with Lookout! Records. Their third album, World Contact Day (1996), further boosted their profile. In 2007, following the divorce of Jeff Alexander and Rochelle Sparman, the band announced their dissolution. Two tribute albums were released subsequently: Let's Go Ghoulie (2008) by Knowhere Records and When The Kids Go Go Go Crazy (2008) by Kamikaze Records. Other notable releases include Re-Animation Festival (1997) and Fun in the Dark (1999).
