Gram Rabbit, an American indie rock band based in Joshua Tree, California, was formed in 2003 by Jesika von Rabbit and Todd Rutherford. Von Rabbit, born Jessica Leischow in Green Bay, Wisconsin, began playing piano at age six and moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1990s. Rutherford, from Porterville, California, developed his skills on piano and guitar before moving to San Francisco. The duo met in 2000 and formed Gram Rabbit after a mutual friend invited them to Joshua Tree. Their debut album, Music to Start a Cult To, was released in August 2004 on Stinky Records. The band gained recognition with their eclectic style and live performances, winning L.A. Weeklyâs best new artist award in 2005 and performing at major festivals like Coachella. Notable singles include "California Christmas" (2008) and "Stars" (2010). The band went on hiatus in 2013 following the release of their EP Braised & Confused, though they reunited for annual Halloween shows.
