Gino D'Auri, born in 1937 in Rome, was an Italian flamenco, fusion, and classical guitarist of Romani origin. He began as a classical guitarist, performing in recitals around Italy and winning local competitions. His musical direction shifted after seeing the movie Sombrero, which featured flamenco dancer José Greco. D'Auri moved to Los Angeles in 1967, playing regularly in flamenco clubs and performing with the José Greco Dance Company in the early 1970s.
He recorded his first album Nuevos Caminos (translated as New Paths) in 1980 with producer Stephen Hill; it was re-released in 1984 as Passion Play. D'Auri collaborated with Japanese fusion artist Keiko Matsui in the late 1980s, appearing on two of her albums. His notable solo albums include Flamenco Mystico (1992) and Flamenco Passion (2003). D'Auri died from cancer at his Los Angeles home on January 26, 2007.
