Biography

Govi is a German American new age and new flamenco musician born Werner Monka on February 27, 1949, in Germany. Govi performed as a guitarist in the bands Blackbird, Virus, and Weed. After winning a national band competition, the ensemble received a recording contract and toured Germany. Govi traveled to India, where he changed his name to Govinda and subsequently Govi. During eight years in India, he began performing on the mandolin, mandocello, sitar, and charango. Govi released the debut studio album Sky High in 1988, which was co-produced by Deuter. The 1997 album Guitar Odyssey reached number 3 on the Billboard New Age chart. Govi subsequently released the albums Seventh Heaven (2000), Mosaico (2002), and Luminosity (2018). Govi collaborated with musician Karunesh. Govi released the EP Four 4 U in 2022.
