Biography

George "Wild Child" Butler, born George Butler on October 1, 1936, in Autaugaville, Alabama, was an American harmonica blues musician and singer. Nicknamed "Wild Child" from a young age, Butler began playing the harmonica with Big Mama Thornton, a family friend. He preferred a life in music over farm work and performed in Chicago, Detroit, Texas, and Louisiana with notable figures such as Big Walter Horton, Sonny Boy Williamson II, and Sunnyland Slim. In 1966, under the direction of Willie Dixon, Butler released his debut album Open Up Baby. Throughout his career, he collaborated with prominent artists including Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Sam Lay, and Big Jack Johnson. His discography includes albums like Keep On Doing What You’re Doing (1969), These Mean Old Blues (1992), Stranger (1994), Lickin' Gravy (1976 / reissue of Funky Butt Lover), The Devil Made Me Do It (1999), and Sho’ Nuff (2001). Butler resided in Windsor, Ontario, until his death on March 1, 2005.
