Biography

Born in Mississippi on January 31, 1944, Charlie Musselwhite is the modern representative of blues played on the harmonica. After a childhood spent in Memphis, his parents moved to Chicago, where he followed the beginnings of rock'n'roll and found a way to quench his passion for the blues. Trained by Big Joe Williams and signed by the Vanguard label, he embarked on a career in 1967 that saw the release of some 30 original albums, including Tennessee Woman (1969), In My Time (1993) with The Blind Boys Alabama, Superharps (1999) with James Cotton and Billy Branch, and Sanctuary (2004), on which Ben Harper collaborated. In 2012, the latter sought out Charlie Musselwhite to expose him to a wider audience with the album Get Up! This collaboration was renewed five years later on No Mercy in This Land. Charlie Musselwhite released 100 Years of Blues with Elvin Bishop in 2020 and the acoustic Mississippi Son in 2022. Three years later, the valiant bluesman returns with Look Out Highway.
