Biography

Georg Breinschmid is an Austrian double bassist and composer born in Austria in 1973. Breinschmid received a classical education at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and performed with ensembles including the Amadeus Ensemble. Breinschmid was a member of the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich from 1994 to 1996 before joining the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic. Breinschmid transitioned to jazz in 1998 and performed with the Zipflo Weinrich Group and the Vienna Art Orchestra. Collaborations included Charlie Mariano, Adam Taubitz, and Archie Shepp. Their recordings include Mauve (2001), which received the Hans-Koller-Preis for CD of the Year in 2002, and Tanzen (2005). Breinschmid documented an interest in Viennese music on the albums Wien bleibt Krk (2008) and Brein's World (2010). Breinschmid received the Hans-Koller-Preis for Newcomer of the Year in 2003. Subsequent recordings include Double Brein (2014), Breinländ (2018), and Classical Brein (2022).
