Biography

Ex‑Girlfriend was formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1989 by the members Monica Boyd, Julia Robertson, Stacy Francis, and Tisha Hunter, who adopted the surname “X” after being signed to Full Force’s subsidiary Forceful Records. Their breakthrough came with the 1991 single "Why Can't You Come Home", which peaked in the top five of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip‑Hop Songs chart, followed by the release of the album X Marks the Spot on October 5, 1991, which reached number thirty‑nine on the Top R&B/Hip‑Hop Albums chart; the single "You (You're the One for Me)" from that album peaked at number thirty‑five. In 1994 the group released the single "X In Your Sex" and the album It’s a Woman Thang on August 30, 1994, though neither project charted. After the 1995 dissolution, each member pursued solo projects-Stacy Francis later appeared on Broadway, Tisha Hunter contributed vocal arrangements for Yvette Michele, and Julia Robertson went solo. The group’s career remains noted for its early 1990s chart successes and its role in the female R&B/hip‑hop scene of that era.
