ExâGirlfriend was formed in Brooklyn, Newâ¯York, in 1989 by the members Monica Boyd, Julia Robertson, Stacyâ¯Francis, and Tisha Hunter, who adopted the surname âXâ after being signed to Fullâ¯Forceâs subsidiary Forceful Records. Their breakthrough came with the 1991 single "Why Can't You Come Home", which peaked in the top five of Billboardâs Hot R&B/HipâHop Songs chart, followed by the release of the album X Marks the Spot on Octoberâ¯5,â¯1991, which reached number thirtyânine on the Top R&B/HipâHop Albums chart; the single "You (You're the One for Me)" from that album peaked at number thirtyâfive. In 1994 the group released the single "X In Your Sex" and the album Itâs a Woman Thang on Augustâ¯30,â¯1994, though neither project charted. After the 1995 dissolution, each member pursued solo projects-Stacyâ¯Francis later appeared on Broadway, Tisha Hunter contributed vocal arrangements for Yvetteâ¯Michele, and Julia Robertson went solo. The groupâs career remains noted for its early 1990s chart successes and its role in the female R&B/hipâhop scene of that era.
