Biography
British singer and actress Elaine Paige rose to fame through her roles in musicals. Born Elaine Jill Bickerstaff in Barnet, Hertfordshire, on March 5, 1948, she sang in a choir and took drama classes at the Aida Foster Theatre School in London after developing an interest in musical theater as a teenager. After being rejected at an audition, she tried again under a different nameâElaine Paigeâwhich she adopted for her first role in The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd by Leslie Briscusse and Anthony Newley in 1964. While making her West End debut in Hair between 1968 and 1970, she sang with the groups Colors of Love and Sparrow and appeared in Carol Reedâs film Oliver!. In 1978, Elaine Paige rose to fame playing the lead role of Eva Perón in Andrew Lloyd Webberâs musical Evita, for which she won the Laurence Olivier Award for Performance of the Year, before taking on the role of Grizabella in the premiere production of Cats (1981) and achieving massive success with the song âMemoryâ, which reached No. 6 on the UK charts. She recorded several cover albums, including *Stages* (No. 2 in 1983), *Cinema* (No. 12 in 1984), and *Love Hurts* (No. 8 in 1985), which featured the duet with Barbara Dickson, â I Know Him So Wellâ (No. 1), from the musical Chess written by Tim Rice and composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of the group ABBA. Following The Queen Albumâa 1988 tribute to the songs of Freddie Mercuryâs bandâLove Can Do That (1991), Romance & the Stage (1993), and Piaf (1994)âperformed in FrenchâElaine Paige made her Broadway debut in 1996 in Sunset Boulevard and performed for a season in The King and I (2000â2001). Six years later, she returned to the West End in The Drowsy Chaperone. Known as âThe First Lady of British Musical Theaterâ for the longevity of her career, she recorded the duet album Elaine Paige and Friends (No. 18) in 2010, featuring Barry Manilow, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, Johnny Mathis, Olivia Newton-John, Dionne Warwick, Idina Menzel, LeeAnn Rimes, Billy Ocean, John Barrowman, Jon Secada, and Michael Bolton. Since 2004, she has hosted the BBC Radio 2 program Elaine Paige on Sunday, and in 2014 she celebrated her 50-year career with the compilation album The Ultimate Collection, announcing her retirement from the stage. Elaine Paige is also vice president of the charity The Childrenâs Trust. In 2026, she released her first original album in sixteen years, Miscellaneous Paige.
