Biography

Marti Webb, born Margaret Webb on December 13, 1944 in Hampstead, London, is a British singer and actress, renowned for her outstanding performances in musical theater. Born into a musical family, she began her artistic training at an early age, studying at the Aida Foster Stage School. At the age of 15, she made her professional debut in the Manchester production of Vivian Ellis's Listen to the Wind, before joining the London production of Anthony Newley's Stop the World - I Want to Get Off, where she discovered her dramatic soprano voice. Her career took a major turn in 1980 when she played the lead role in Tell Me on a Sunday, a solo musical written especially for her by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black. The story of a young English woman's search for love in New York was a huge success, propelling Webb to the top of her career. The song "Take That Look Off Your Face", taken from the show, reached No. 3 in the British charts. Thereafter, the singer-actress continued to shine on London stages, appearing in such productions as Godspell, Half a Sixpence, The Good Companions, Cats, Annie, The King and I, The Goodbye Girl, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Calendar Girls. She also played such iconic roles as Eva Perón in Evita and the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella. In addition to her theatrical career, Marti Webb has recorded several albums, including Tell Me on a Sunday (1980), Won't Change Places (1981), I'm Not That Kind of Girl (1982), Encore (1985), Marti Webb Sings Great Themes from Television (1986) and Gershwin (1987). In 1989, the album Performance was recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Ian Hughes. She has also taken part in collaborative projects, notably Alan Parsons' album Freudiana in 1990. In 1995, she released the album Music & Songs from Evita, before retiring from the studio. In 2014, she reprised the role of Emma in a new production of Tell Me on a Sunday at the West End (London).
